EN57AKŚ – a modernised version of one of the most popular EMUs in Poland. The vehicle was manufactured at the State Wagon Factory Pafawag, and the modernisation for the Silesian Railways was carried out by NEWAG SA and Zakłady Naprawcze Lokomotyw Elektrycznych Gliwice. During the modernisation, the front of the train was changed and an ergonomic driver’s cab was implemented. Changes were also made to the drive train, with the series motors replaced with asynchronous motors. The passenger compartment was also modernised. Separate seats were installed, and the layout of each segment was changed to single-space, leaving only sliding doors in the passages between the segments.

he first units were put into service in December 2011. The Silesian Railways owns a total of seven EN57AKŚ vehicles. The EMU consists of 2 outermost control segments and a central motorised segment. The maximum speed of the vehicles is 120 km/h, which is sufficient for intercity connections within the urban agglomeration. The vehicle is suitable for transporting people with disabilities. To make it easier for wheelchair users to get on and off, the vehicle was fitted with 2 lightweight transport platforms on both sides of the Rb carriage.
